Campaigners have won a battle against plans to increase quarrying near an ancient monument in North Yorkshire.

They argued the area is of national archaeological importance. Councillors agreed and rejected the plans.

Tarmac said it would appeal against a decision to refuse its plans to quarry tonnes of sand and gravel at Ladybridge Farm, near Thornborough Henges.

The land could cope with the quarrying said Tarmac, adding it hoped factual evidence would prevail at its appeal.

North Yorkshire County councillors voted 6 to 3 to reject the application at a planning meeting on Tuesday.

 

So if North Yorkshire CC value neolithic henges and settlements above economic development, why do Southend BC value Anglo Saxon findings so little?

My thoughts exactly on hearing about this!. The heritage of our land is ours in trust for future generations, it is not ours to plunder, for profit nor to speed up a journey.
Sad that Southend Council are not as in tune with the wishes of the local electorate as it seems those up in Yorkshire are. :(

Well done to all who campaigned to save Thornborough, sometimes the will of the people wins through (with a little help im sure from the ancient spirits of the place).

The thing that makes me laugh is, that Southend Council have the cheek to use the find as a tourist lure !!!

I wish that were true, Southend Council is sitting on a gold mine for local tourism, if only they would recognise that our site, is the Sutton Hoo of Southend!

The site should not be tarmaced over, but developed as an educational resource to allow local kids the unique opportunity of learning about their heritage hands on.

As it stands, its unlikely that the treasure will ever come "home", as the council just cant/won't finance a suitable home for it.

Pitiful when Southend tries to sell itself as some sort of 'city of culture'. At least when its not trying to be the new las Vegas that is... Amazing that they could send George Krawitz on a publically funded 2 week 'factfinding' jolly to the gambling haunts of Las Vegas, after which he duly resigned, now the council says it can't even aford to employ a few lollypop ladies. Who was it that once described Southend Council as 'the fourty thieves???' - and that was back in the sixties, so my mum tells me....
